Valkjes voor Karin & Cora

Zoals sommige wel hebben gelezen ben ik nu de 2 overgebleven jongen van Kuifje&Bobbie met de hand aan het groot brengen. :)
Ondanks een goede 1e ronde met 5 mooie jongen hebben ze de 2e ronde verknald door de jongen te plukken en verwaarlozen en zijn er helaas 4 overleden... :(
Nu heb ik dus de volledige voeding voor deze 2 overgenomen, dat gaat goed en ik denk dat ze het allebei wel gaan redden. ;)

Omdat dit toch een apart verhaal wordt heb ik er ook een apart dagboek voor geopend. ;)

De oudste wordt een bont geparelde witmasker man voor Karin en is vandaag 5 weken oud, hij is van 27 mei. Hij heeft nog geen naam maar daar is Karin druk over aan het brainstormen. Hij wordt waarschijnlijk voor Dimple dus misschien weet iemand een leuke naam die daar bij past? ::)

De jongste, eigenlijk het 5e jong, wordt een geparelde witmasker pop en is van 2 juni en is nu dus 4 weken en 1 dag.
Zij liep erg achter maar door de voeding nu zie je ze groeien en komen er steeds meer veertjes tevoorschijn. Zij is door Cora omgedoopt tot Macey. :P

Wat een knoeiboel zeg  :D Die van Cora kan er wat van  ;D Hoe hou jij trouwens de pap warm ? Ik heb nog steeds geen naam hoor  ::) Ik dacht eerst aan freggle ( = sproet ) omdat Dimple kuiltje in je wang betekend, maar ik moest meteen aan die stomme poppenserie van vroeger denken  :D Dat wordt het dus niet. Ik denk nog even verder.

En het valt niet allemaal weg te poetsen helaas. :-/
Maar de pap is binnen 5 minuten op hoor, dus die hoef ik niet warm te houden! ;D

Ik moet het alleen wat dikker gaan geven, want de poepjes zijn vaak dun maar ik ga ik binnenkort toch overstappen op de lepel want straks moeten ze pap met zaadjes leren eten en straks alleen zaad. Jouw bontje heeft de trosgierst al goed ontdekt dus dat is wel een goed teken. ;)

En ik wist niet dat jouw namen ook echt betekenissen hadden joh? :-[

En ik vind Freggle juist leuk, die serie toen ook, jeugdsentiment! :D

Hahahaha ja ze eten al netter hoor, ze eten nu van de lepel en dat gaat prima.  ;)
Dadelijk om 16.00 ga ik ze weer voeren en zal dan Raymon laten filmen. Dan zal ik vanavond laat wel een stukje doormailen, want we moeten eerst nog uit eten. :P

Maar bontje eet zelf ook al aardig wat trosgierst en Macey begon ook al een beetje te knabbelen;

En ze groeien ook allebei goed en Macey begint eindelijk steeds meer veertjes te krijgen. :)

Inmiddels gehad ! Wat een leuke filmpjes  ;D Het zijn echt schatjes hè ?!! Ik kan bijna niet wachten :-* Maare, ik kom wel de 2 jonge valkjes tegelijk ophalen, dus kan je zeker nog een week extra genieten van hem. Ik ben bijna uit de naam : óf Switch of Pixel  :D En voor het gewone bontje zit ik te denken aan Nessa.

Hmmm ik vind ze alle 3 wel leuk eigenlijk. Zou het zelf niet kiezen, maar bij de rest van je valkenbende past het goed. :P

Het gaat minder goed met de 2 jonkies... :-/
Ze bedelen niet meer zo om eten en ik kan ze ook minder geven dan voorheen. Ook hebben ze dunne ontlasting.
Ik heb de pap al dikker gemaakt en ik had er al wat kleine zaadjes doorheen gemengd, maar dat maakt weinig verschil. De oudste eet al wel goed van de trosgierst maar de jongste niet. Ook legen de kroppen minder snel/goed en lijken die zaadjes bij de oudste te blijven zitten. Ik maak me zorgen... ::)

Ze krijgen pap van CéDé, die had ik gewoon voor nood in huis gehaald. Vorig jaar had ik Nutribird maar dat kan ik hier nergens krijgen. Ik had dat vorig jaar in Wijnegem bij Antwerpen gehaald. Ik zal het dus daar maar weer gaan halen, maar ik weet niet of ik er kan geraken daar de ring dicht is! :o
En ik kan er pas morgen om, want ik zit nu tot 18.00 op mijn werk, zal je net weer zien hé... :-/

O, wat erg Mandy ! :'( En het ging zo goed !  ::) Ik zou juist de voeding niet dikker maken hoor maar dunner, en zorg dat de temperatuur van de voeding goed is, want te koude voeding kan ook een langzame krop veroorzaken. Hier een artikeltje over hoe je de krop weer op gang kan brengen. Die pedialyght is gewoon een electrolytenpoeder wat bijv. aan babies met diarree wordt gegeven ter voorkoming van uitdrogen :

"Slow Crop" is when the baby bird's crop does not empty at the normal rate. Sometimes slow crop is a symptom of another illness, instead of being the actual ailment. Regardless of the cause, slow crop must be dealt with as soon as it is detected to prevent dehydration and starvation. Contact your veternarian immediately.

Improper handfeeding techniques can also cause slow crop. If the handfeeding formula is too cold, the bird becomes chilled and the system slows down, thus the crop will not empty. This may also happen if the brooder is not warm enough. Never let the baby bird become chilled.

The method of encouraging the crop to empty normally that we have found to effective is very simple, but may be time comsuming. Wanda Barras, from Cage'n Bird in Martinville, LA gave us this tip. Mrs. Barras may be reached at (318)394-6683.

If it will be several hours before you can see the veternarian, you may want to take a fresh papaya; peal and remove the seeds. Grind or crush the papaya into a pulp. Mix 1 part papaya pulp, 1 part Pedialyte or Lactated Ringers Solution (available at Cage'n Bird). Warm this mixture to the appropriate temperature (103-108 degrees). Offer small amounts of this mixture (30-50% of normal intake) to the baby bird very often. If he will take it every 10-20 minutes, feed it to him. DO NOT FEED FORMULA UNTIL THE CROP IS EMPTY! Do not give up, even if it takes all day before the crop empties completely.

Once the crop has emptied, we mix the formula with the following ratio: 1 part formula, 1 part papaya mixture, 1 -1 1/2 parts Pedialyte or Lactated Ringers Solution. Warm to the appropriate temperature and feed a small amount of this mixture to the baby bird. If the crop empties within a reasonable amount of time, we continue to decrease the amount of the papaya mixture until we are back to mixing the formula by the manufacturers directions. We increase the feeding amount slowly. Of course, you will have to feed more often.

*If the crop does not empty normally when the formula is reintroduced, go back to the papaya mixture and try again.

Hier nog een artikeltje over kropverzuring en een overrekte krop :

One of the most common digestive problems of cockatiel neonates is sour crop. There are a number of reasons why sour crop occurs and it might be helpful to look at them in order to understand why sour crop happens to chicks. This is a picture of a Cockatiel chick with a very full crop.
One of the most common reasons is food that is fed to the chick is too cold. The cold food in the crop tends to drain off the chick's body heat and this in turn will shut down the chick's digestive system. Remember that young chicks do have problems with thermal regulation. Cold food will only serve to hasten crop stasis. Another very common reason is that environmental temperatures are too cool for the chick and the chick becomes chilled. If the chick is chilled all the chick's body heat is used in an attempt to keep the chick warm and there isn't any energy available for the digestion of the food. Food transit time within the chick's digestive system tends to be affected by diet and the environment. The correct temperature for feeding the formula plus the correct temperature within the environment are keys to having the digestive system of the chick working properly.

Food that is fed too hot can cause crop burns and damage the crop. Ideal formula temperatures for feeding cockatiel chicks are between 105-107 degrees Fahrenheit. These higher temperatures are best checked with a digital thermometer. Using the inside of the wrist to measure formula temperatures is risky and inaccurate. Eventually your wrist will desensitize to the feel of the warmth of the formula and you risk serious burns or feeding food that is too cool for the chick.

When formula is fed that is too high or too low in solids, sour crop can occur. Excess dietary protein or fat may cause the digestive system to slow down. The consistency of the formula fed must be appropriate for the age of the chick. If the food that is fed is too thick it may result in severe dehydration which could quite possibly claim the life of a very young chick. Water is essential to life and is needed by the cells for metabolic activity. Dehydration of the chick is often one of the results of crop stasis. Once dehydration has occurred, the chick becomes critical very quickly. Fluid replacement is then an absolute necessity and may need to be given to the chick so that the life of the chick can be saved. An overly rich formula will cause the slow down of the digestive tract and may result in sour crop. Overly thick formula doesn't have enough water to allow the food to pass through the digestive tract, but instead may cause the chick to dehydrate leaving behind a doughy mass of food in the bottom of the crop.

A breeder may over feed the chick and as a result over stretch the crop. The crop then looses its elasticity and muscle tone. This can prevent the crop from emptying properly on its own, thus allowing food to sit in the bottom of the crop and sour. If the crop is over stretched a crop bra can be used to assist the crop in emptying.

Infections are another source of crop stasis. Bacterial, viral, or yeast infections may be the source of crop stasis. Systemic disease such as kidney or liver may also cause the crop to stop emptying.

Another source of crop stasis is a foreign body in the crop or the crop becoming impacted by the chick eating nesting substrate.

Sour food in the crop is the major cause of crop stasis. Usually the old food sits and ferments in the bottom of the crop. As the food becomes more sour the crop emptying time gets slower and slower. Fresh food that is fed on top of already sour food will sour much more quickly. Fermentation increases the bacterial growth within the crop and may result in a bacterial infection along with a secondary yeast infection. It is then advisable not to feed more food on top of food that is already sour.

The crop must empty completely once every twenty-four hours. If the crop does not empty completely, this is a red flag indicator that sour crop could be developing in the chick. At this time I either try a quarter teaspoon of baby Applesauce or a quarter teaspoon of papaya concentrate added to the handfeeding formula. Most often I find this immediately resolves the problem and the crop returns to emptying normally. At the same time I closely monitor the temperature of the formula and feed at the higher temperatures to increase the gut transit time. Always check the formula with a digital thermometer.

Now what can you do if you have a chick with sour crop. First and most important you do not want to feed more formula on top of that already sour food. You will want to get some unflavored Pedialyte (electrolyte replacement fluid) and feed small amounts, usually about two to four cc's depending on the age of the chick every two hours for the next twelve. At each feeding you will want to very gently massage the crop, making sure not to push up on the crop. Pushing up could cause the chick to aspirate food. This is a serious problem and can result in aspiration pneumonia or death. Critical to resolving this problem with sour crop is the formula temperature should be at least 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is best to feed the Pedialyte at 105-107 degrees Fahrenheit and to check it with a digital thermometer. The environmental temperatures for chicks ten days or older are 88-92 degrees Fahrenheit. Chicks that are much younger do better at temperatures that are between 96-98 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the crop refuses to empty with the institution of these measures, I would immediately consult my avian veterinarian. Hand fed chicks become critical very quickly and often need subcutaneous fluids in order to save the chick's life. There are many other factors that can cause crop stasis. Some of these are viral, bacterial, yeast infections and systemic diseases. It is best to consult with your avian vet if you are unable to resolve your chick's sour crop problems within the twelve hour time frame. An avian professional will be able to diagnose the cause of your chick's sour crop and can institute life saving measures. Dehydration is a life threatening result of sour crop and requires immediate emergency medical attention.
